The Octopus and Its Three Hearts
An octopus has not one heart but three. Two of them pump blood through the , where it picks up oxygen, and the third that oxygen-rich blood to the rest of the body.
Its blood is unusual, too. Instead of the iron-based hemoglobin that makes our blood red, octopuses a copper-based called hemocyanin, which turns their blood blue. Hemocyanin works well in cold water with little oxygen, a common in the deep sea.
This system comes with a . Researchers believe the heart that serves the body while the octopus swims, which may explain why swimming so quickly. Perhaps that is why octopuses seem to prefer along the .
